On May 30, 2022, former Shelter Afrique CEO Andrew Chimpondah filed a lawsuit against the organisation, alleging that he was removed from office without being granted a hearing.
Chimpondah, a Zimbabwean national, was employed by Shelter Afrique in July 2018 for a five-year contract. He is seeking compensation for his monthly salary, house allowance, and other benefits, including diplomatic status, insurance cover, and education grant for his children, as well as a car loan.
According to the petition, Chimpondah was voted out in February without being given an opportunity to respond to the accusations levelled against him. He is now seeking a temporary court order to stop the organisation from replacing him, pending the determination of the case.
Shelter Afrique, however, argues that the court lacks the powers to determine the matter, citing its immunity from legal actions. The organisation's lawyer, Chacha Odera, stated that Shelter Afrique enjoys immunity from prosecution and execution proceedings at its headquarters.
Justice Anne Mwaure Ngibuini has scheduled a ruling on the issue of jurisdiction for June 30. Chimpondah's lawyer, Danstan Omari, has asked the court to dismiss the objection, arguing that his client has no other place to seek justice.
