As the August General Election draws near, Azimio La Umoja One Kenya presidential hopeful Raila Odinga has intensified his vote hunt in Western Kenya, promising the region Cabinet posts and addressing key issues.
Speaking in Western Kenya, Mr Odinga said Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa would be in his government, a move that has been seen as an attempt to win over the region's support.
Mr Odinga's promise comes after he dangled the position of National Treasury Cabinet Secretary and Senate Speaker to Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende respectively.
Mr Oparanya and Mr Marende come from Kakamega and Vihiga respectively, but Mr Wamalwa, who is associated with the Democratic Action Party of Kenya, is from Trans Nzoia.
Mr Odinga also promised to address problems in the maize sector, including reducing the cost of farm inputs and curbing the importation of maize from Uganda and elsewhere.
“Fertiliser prices will fall to Sh2,000 a bag in September,” Mr Odinga said.
Mr Odinga's running mate Martha Karua also spoke in Naivasha, saying looters of public resources would face the law if Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance takes power.
Ms Karua urged Kenyans to elect leaders with a record in fighting corruption and praised the promised “Babacare” scheme, saying it would ensure universal health.
She also defended the decision by President Uhuru Kenyatta to set up a dry port in Naivasha, describing the town as a commercial hub.
