On a rainy day in Eugene, Oregon, Faith Kipyegon made a statement in the women's 1500m at the Prefontaine Classic, shattering the meeting record with a time of 3:52.59 on May 28, 2022.
Double Olympic champion Kipyegon, who finished second in her season opener in Doha, showed her impressive finishing kick to secure the win. Her time ranks as the ninth fastest in the 1500m history and sets her up nicely for qualification in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games.
She outpaced Ethiopia's World Championship bronze medalist Gudaf Tsegay, who finished with a time of 3:54.29.
Meanwhile, in the men's Bowerman's mile, the Kenyan duo of Abel Kipsang and world champion Timothy Cheruiyot finished third and fourth, respectively, in a race won by Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Reigning world champion Cheruiyot timed 3:50.77, while Kipsang finished with a personal best time of 3:50.87.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce made it a women's sprint double for Jamaica with a victory in the 200m in 22.41, after Elaine Thompson-Herah had won the women's 100m.
Thompson-Herah, who won back-to-back Olympic 100m-200m doubles in 2016 and last year, captured the women's 100m in 10.79.
Thompson-Herah expressed her relief at crossing the finish line healthy, despite the rainy conditions.
