On May 28, 2022, a meeting between parents and the Director of Education in Westlands was scheduled to discuss the presence of Open Heavens Ministry Church at Kangemi Primary School. However, the meeting was aborted due to the Director's unavailability.
According to the petitioners, the school has been turned into a worship center, disrupting learning activities. Parents claim that the church's activities are interfering with their children's ability to attend remedial classes.
"This pastor should not be allowed to conduct his activities in this school. Let them get somewhere to rent for their spiritual duties," said Robert, a parent at the school. "We are not saying spreading the gospel is a bad thing, let it be done at the correct place. This is a government institution, and such should not be allowed."
The parents had petitioned the Ministry of Education the previous week, demanding that Pastor Allan Jomba and his church be evicted from the school. Their petition read, in part, "We pray that the Ministry of Education and the Nairobi City County Government inquire into and establish under what circumstances the Head Teacher of Kangemi Primary School allocated/leased part of the school to one pastor Allan Jomba to operate a church in the school compound."
The petition also recommended that the Ministry of Education and Nairobi City County Government cause the eviction of Pastor Allan Jomba's Church from Kangemi Primary School and engage relevant state agencies to prosecute all persons involved in the illegal allocation/leasing of the school compound.
However, Pastor Allan Jomba has dismissed claims that he leased the school, stating that he got permission from the school management and has been using his resources to help the school and community.
