On July 17, 2019, Waihiga Mwaura, a journalist with Citizen TV, appeared in court in Nairobi to face charges related to the 2016 Rio Olympics scandal.

According to reports, Waihiga was among officials who were accused of embezzling KSh 55 million meant for the Olympics.

Waihiga claimed that he had received information about the list of officials who were supposed to receive money from NOCK while he was in Rio, but he denied receiving any money himself.

He stated, "Nilipata taarifa kuhusu orodha hiyo nikiwa Rio.

Waihiga also denied receiving any money from NOCK or any other government official, stating, "Mahitaji yangu yote yaligharamiwa na mwajiri wangu na vile vile wafanyikazi wenzangu ambao tuliandamana nao.
