On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Manchester City made a statement in China, defeating West Ham United 4-1 in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

West Ham took an early lead with a penalty from Mark Noble, but Manchester City quickly equalized through David Silva. Lukas Nmecha then scored from the spot to give Pep Guardiola's side the half-time lead.

England international Raheem Sterling scored a brace in the second half, as West Ham's defense struggled in Nanjing. Sterling's composed finishes sealed a handsome City win.

Manchester City fielded a mix of first-team regulars and reserves, with Silva leading the side and Kevin De Bruyne, who missed most of last season injured, coming on as a second-half substitute.

Spanish international midfielder Rodri made his debut for City, who had arrived in China two days late due to an administrative issue.

City's win was a stark contrast to the 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the other match of the exhibition tournament.

Steve Bruce, Newcastle's new head coach, will face a tough task in the upcoming season, as his team's heavy defeat to Wolves in Nanjing was a worrying sign.
