On July 17, 2019, police arrested a woman at Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, on suspicion of conspiring to buy a child from another poor woman.

According to reports, Sheila Adhiambo Aluoch, who had been barren for years, had faked her pregnancy to buy a new-born child from her friend Pheobe Achieng, who lives in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums.

However, the plan was botched when Pumwani Hospital officials discovered that the woman who had registered as Sheila was actually Pheobe, who was waiting to sell the baby.

‘‘Sheila’s husband came in Pumwani but he did not find Sheila and that person who registered as Sheila was Pheobe who was just waiting to sell the baby. This is when our officials raised an alarm. The police thereafter called Sheila and she was nabbed by the police.’’ said Geoffrey Mosiria, Pumwani Hospital administrator.

Area DCIO Kiamba Rukunga confirmed that investigations were underway and that all suspects would be arraigned in court once the probe was complete.
