NAIROBI, KENYA: Nairobi's Sh300 billion affordable housing project is finally set to take off, with Governor Mike Sonko announcing that work will begin this Friday.
The project, which aims to put up 200,000 affordable housing units, has been in the works since 2016, but was delayed due to resistance from tenants of the old houses.
Phase one of the project, which covers areas such as old and new Ngara, Pangani, Jeevanjee-Bachelors, Ngong Road Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road, is expected to put up between 10,000 and 12,000 units.
According to Sonko, the contractors are expected to visit the site on Friday and lay the groundwork for the works ahead.
“We are committed to developing the city and achieving affordable housing in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s big four agenda,” said Sonko.
