On July 17, 2019, a US court handed down a life sentence to Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, the former co-leader of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel, along with an additional 30 years in prison.

The 62-year-old Guzman was convicted in February of crimes spanning a quarter century, including the trafficking of hundreds of tons of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and marijuana into the United States.

As part of his sentence, Guzman was ordered to pay back $12.6 billion in proceeds from his crimes.
