As of May 24, 2022, the National Government has been supporting 2,264 older persons and 213 individuals with severe disabilities in Marsabit County through the Inua Jamii cash transfer program.
The program targets Kenyan citizens aged 70 years and above, as well as individuals with severe disabilities who have no income or pension.
Moyale Sub-County Coordinator for Social Development Pius Muthaura disclosed that the program also benefits individuals with severe disabilities regardless of their age.
According to Muthaura, the National Government has transferred a total of Sh19.8 million to the accounts of the beneficiaries, where they or their caregivers can access and withdraw the money.
Some beneficiaries with breastfeeding children have also received a top-up of between Sh1,000 and Sh2,000 through the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education program.
"That is why some of the beneficiaries are finding a difference in their accounts, some with Sh9,000 or Sh10,000 while others are getting the normal Sh8,000 for the four months they have not been paid respectively," Muthaura explained.
The National Government recognizes and handles the old and vulnerable with dignity, which is why it came up with the Inua Jamii program to provide them with money for their upkeep and enable them to access drugs in case of sickness.
Muthaura appealed to the beneficiaries to use the money for the intended purpose, avoiding mismanagement to ensure they live longer.
