Kenya: Man to Hang for Killing Woman Who Rejected His Advances

On April 29, 2017, a tragic incident occurred outside Mweiga Police Station in Kieni West sub-county, Kenya. A 34-year-old farmhand, Daniel Oyondi Moi, hacked Regina Kinya to death with a machete after she rejected his advances for a love relationship.

According to the court ruling, Mr. Moi had been stalking Regina for some time and could not accept the fact that she was still in a relationship with the father of her children. He decided to take matters into his own hands, resulting in Regina's brutal murder.

Justice Teresiah Matheka, in her ruling, noted that Mr. Moi's actions were a result of his own jealousy and possessiveness. She stated, "Courts must send the strongest message marital or relationship disputes cannot, should not and should never be resolved through killing or causing any harm to the other party."

Mr. Moi's defense team argued that he was provoked after calling Regina several times and his phone call was answered by an unidentified man. However, Justice Matheka rejected this claim, stating that Mr. Moi's actions were premeditated and not a result of provocation.

Regina's murder has left her children orphaned, and they are now living with different relatives in Nyeri and Meru. Justice Matheka's ruling emphasized the need for the society to revive its revulsion to any form of violence and for lovers to learn that if a relationship does not work, the partners must have the human sense to walk away and seek other solutions.
