On July 17, 2019, Nairobi's football community gathered to pay their respects to the late Joe Kadenge, a football legend who left an indelible mark on the sport.
At the requiem mass held at Friends Church along Ngong Road, a sea of dignitaries and mourners filled the church to capacity, including opposition leader Raila Odinga, Makadara MP George Aladwa, Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
Others in attendance included Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris and Harambee Stars Coach Jacob Ghost Mulee.
Earlier, Kadenge's family had held a fundraiser, where leaders contributed generously to support the late footballer's family.
During the fundraiser, Raila Odinga announced plans to rename Nairobi's City Stadium in honour of Kadenge, stating, "I have talked to President Uhuru Kenyatta on the renaming of City Stadium to Joe Kadenge Stadium. Both of us have spoken with Governor Mike Sonko about the same and this will be done in his honour,"
