On July 17, 2019, the Kenya Premier League (KPL) transfer window opened, but AFC Leopards, also known as Ingwe, seemed uninterested in bolstering their squad with new players. In fact, the club has released a significant number of players who were regular starters for the team.
Among the players released are Kenya international Paul Were and former Harambee Stars defender David 'Cheche' Ochieng', who were expected to be retained by the club. However, contract extension negotiations were unsuccessful, leading to their release.
Other players who have left the club include Wayi Yeka, Eric Ndayishimiye, Ivan Sekazza, Marcel Kaheza, Jaffrey Awiti, Yusuf Mainge, Shami Kibwana, and former Ushuru midfielder Aziz Okaka. The duo of Yusuf Mainge and Jaffrey Awiti have handed in transfer requests, citing lucrative deals from other clubs.
Ingwe's recent election of new leadership had sparked hope among fans that the club would finally have a shot at winning the KPL again. However, the mass exodus of players has raised concerns about the team's ability to compete next season.
For over two decades, AFC Leopards has not seen the KPL trophy, with the management being majorly blamed for it. The club's poor performance has been attributed to the politics overshadowing everything else, greatly affecting the team's performance.
