Published on July 17, 2019, the Lion King soundtrack album has been met with criticism from East African artists and fans, who feel that the album's lack of representation from the region is a missed opportunity.
Bien, Sauti Sol's lead singer, has been at the forefront of the criticism, with a blunt and unapologetic response to the album's East African snub.
Responding to an Instagram post by his fellow bandmate, Fancy Fingers, Bien wrote, 'Fck you East Africans. Work hard. This is not your uncle's movie. It's a business. No pity party. Everyone wants to eat. You better have something on your plate.'
Victoria Kimani responded to Bien's rant, saying, 'Throw the whole EA away…. but …. preserve the Animals??❤️.'
Other East African stars have also weighed in on the controversy, with some expressing their disappointment and frustration at the lack of representation.
