Kenya basketball star Tyler Okari has made history by winning the Sports Personality of the month award for June, thanks to his impressive performance in the Zone Five African Games qualifiers held in Kampala, Uganda at the end of last month.

Okari's exceptional skills on the court earned him the title of Most Valuable Player, as Kenya qualified for the African Games set to be held in Morocco next month, after defeating Egypt in a thrilling match.

For his outstanding achievement, Okari received a StarTimes 43 inch digital television set and Sh100,000 prize money, which he described as a 'good belated birthday gift' and a motivation to strive for greater things.

Okari edged out other notable athletes, including Kenya Sevens player Andrew Amonde, Charles Mneria Yosei, Fazal Khan and Ibrahim Yego, and the volleyball pair of Gaudencia Makokha and Naomie Too, who all showcased impressive performances in their respective events.

As the shooting guard for Bakken Bears in Denmark, Okari will be looking to extend his good form to the Fiba Afrobasket Championship starting this weekend in Bamako, Mali, where Morans will feature in the week-long competition.

Okari joins an elite group of 23 previous winners, including World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge and World 5000 champion Helen Obiri, who have received the prestigious award.
