On Monday evening, a bomb exploded near the Kiunga area in southern Kenya, targeting security units. The improvised device was planted by al-Shabab extremists from Somalia, according to a senior police official.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the militants ambushed a Toyota Land Cruiser after hiding in the bushes around the area where the bomb went off. Two officers were injured in the blast.
Al-Shabab has vowed retribution on Kenya for fighting the militants who are attempting to topple Somalia's weak U.N.-backed government.
