On July 16, 2019, a significant development took place in Nakuru County, as the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voted to impeach the County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Roads, Lucy Kariuki.
The motion for her impeachment was tabled in the assembly on Tuesday, with a majority of 49 out of 71 MCAs voting in support of her removal. This decision came just a day after Governor Lee Kinyanjui announced a Cabinet reshuffle, which included a proposal to transfer Ms. Kariuki to the department of Youth and Gender.
The MCAs accused Ms. Kariuki of mismanaging the county's Boresha Barabara initiative, a flagship project aimed at improving dilapidated infrastructure in 55 wards. They also alleged that she had a bad working relationship with officers in her department, failed to honour invitations by assembly committees, and interfered with procurement processes.
Ms. Kariuki, a former Kenya Pipeline Engineer, denied all the accusations, stating her innocence.
Ms. Kariuki's impeachment marks a significant turning point in the governance of Nakuru County, and it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the county's infrastructure development and governance.
