On July 15, 2019, President John Magufuli announced that his administration had dismissed 54 Tanzanian police officers for indiscipline between January and June.
Speaking at the launch of 20 housing units for police officers in Geita region, Magufuli praised Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro for his efforts to clean up the police force.
“Keep on being strict on the observation of discipline in the police force,” Magufuli told Sirro, according to The Citizen.
Magufuli also revealed that an additional 157 police officers had been warned for similar offenses, including torture, robbery, and wrongful accusations.
These actions follow a previous crackdown on March 29, 2017, when Magufuli sacked Inspector-General Ernest Mangu and replaced him with Simon Sirro.
That move came after a spate of killings in the Coastal region, which had seen 31 people, including politicians and security officers, killed.
