Private Security Guards in Kenya to Get Guns Under New Regulations

On July 5, 2019, the Private Security Regulations Act was gazetted, paving the way for private security guards to be issued with guns and other tools. However, not all guards will be armed, according to the Kenya National Private Security Workers Union.

The union's Secretary General, Isaac Andabwa, explained that guards from specific private security companies and those on special assignments will be issued with guns. These include guards posted at banks, airports, supermarkets, and malls.

Andabwa dismissed speculations that the roles of private security guards will compete with those of the Kenya Police Service. Instead, he emphasized that private security will complement the work of the police.

The union has pledged to cooperate with the National Government in conducting awareness campaigns to sensitize citizens on the new laws.
