On July 16, 2019, the Advertising Practitioners' Association (APA) hosted the first Young Creatives' Hackathon, bringing together 25 creatives aged 21-30 years to crack a brief on the Tusker Lager brand.
The brief, to 'Re-ignite Tusker as a modern icon of national pride,' was a challenge for the teams, which paired creatives from agencies, corporate, and freelancers. They had less than 48 hours to crack the brief at Nairobi Garage, a co-working space.
Coaching and development support were provided by top creative leads in Kenya, including Max Ngari, Emuron Alemu, Jason Bruckner, and Sam Kihanya. Twenty-two of the 25 teams managed to crack the brief and had three minutes to present their pitches to the panel of judges.
The top three teams, 'Koko Iko,' 'Please Find Attached,' and 'Spirit,' were shortlisted for their unique and relevant ideas. The winning team, 'Koko Iko,' consisting of Stephen Kiprono and Mutwiri Njagi, emerged as the best, followed by 'Please Find Attached' and 'Spirit' in second and third positions, respectively.
The winning team, 'Koko Iko,' won an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas, USA to attend the Creative LIAsions this October. The Creative LIAisons is a programme fully-funded by LIA for young creatives, providing them with expertise, insight, new professional networking opportunities, and the chance to observe judging in the judging rooms.
