On July 16, 2019, Tanzanian President John Magufuli made headlines for his no-nonsense approach to policing, firing 54 rogue police officers between January and June.
Speaking at the launch of 20 housing units for police officers in Geita region, Magufuli emphasized the importance of discipline within the force, praising Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro's efforts to clean up the police.
“Keep on being strict on the observation of discipline in the police force,” Magufuli told Sirro, according to The Citizen.
Magufuli revealed that an additional 157 police officers had been warned for various offenses, including torturing civilians, robbery, and wrongful implication of people.
