On July 16, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko visited Conjestina Achieng, a boxing heroine, at the Eden House Rehabilitation Centre in Diani, where she has been undergoing treatment for drug addiction.
During his visit, Sonko called on youths to seek help from government and organisations offering development initiatives, rather than turning to a life of crime and drug abuse.
‘We cannot have a society that is breeding criminal gangs and drug addicts. We have to ensure all our youths are involved in productive activities,’ Sonko told journalists at the centre.
He hailed Conjestina's progress, noting that her recovery will serve as a great inspiration to many youth who have been in her state.
Conjestina, who was airlifted by the Governor from Kisumu for the rehabilitation, expressed her gratitude to Sonko for his continued support.
‘I will always appreciate what the governor has been doing for me and many other people in need of help,’ she said.
The Governor also took the eight recovering addicts at the rehab for shopping at Naivas Ukunda, as part of their rehabilitation process.
David Karatu, the rehab’s clinical coordinator, praised Sonko for his instrumental role in helping addicts recover, saying that Conjestina is one of many who have been helped by the Governor.
