On July 10, 2019, police in Nyeri laid an ambush for 83-year-old Lydia Mumbi Ndirangu, who was traveling in a matatu from Nyeri town to Muthinga.

After a search, police recovered 268 grams of marijuana worth Sh500, wrapped in a newspaper.

Ms Ndirangu was detained at Muthinga Patrol base, with the marijuana sent to the Government Chemist for analysis.

On July 10, 2019, Lydia pleaded guilty to possession, citing her vulnerable situation as a widow and a victim of a past accident.

The court granted the prosecution more time to await the Government Chemist's report and prepare the case.

Ms Ndirangu will spend an additional week in custody, awaiting a probation officer's report, which is scheduled for July 22, 2019.
