On July 16, 2019, leaders from Vihiga County urged the Judiciary to expedite the process of setting up a High Court in the county, citing the long distances residents travel to access justice.
MPs Ernest Ogesi, Charles Gimose, Alfred Agoi, and Omboko Milemba noted that the region had the features to deserve a High Court, and that justice should be brought nearer to the people.
“We have a population of over 700,000 people. There are many cases that need to be addressed. Going to Kakamega and Kisumu is tedious for some people who may not afford the transport cost,” Mr Ogesi said.
Chief Justice David Maraga announced plans to open a sub-registry of the High Court in Vihiga, where lawyers would file cases and Kakamega Presiding Judge William Musyoka would sit for a week every month.
Mr Maraga also stated that a lands registry would be set up in Vihiga, where Justice Nelly Matheka would solve cases from around one week every month.
