On July 15, 2019, a Nairobi court witnessed the arraignment of two individuals accused of using the name of former first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta to con unsuspecting individuals.

Irene Wanjiku Njeri and Fredrick Kinani appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, facing charges of obtaining money through false pretense and conspiracy to defraud.

The two were accused of conspiring to defraud Mary Wanjiku of Sh250,000 by falsely pretending they were in a position to help her children join the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and secure jobs in Germany through Mrs. Kenyatta.

During the arraignment, Njeri pleaded for lenient bond terms, citing her status as a single mother and the illness of her children. Kinani also pleaded for leniency, stating he is the sole breadwinner for seven children.

The two denied the charges and were released on Sh100,000 cash bail each. The matter will be mentioned on August 13, 2019.
