On June 29, 2018, a tragic incident unfolded in Bungoma, Kenya, where a senior police officer lost his life at the hands of irate boda boda riders.
According to eyewitnesses, Deputy OCS Paul Kerich of Khachonge Police Station engaged in a heated argument with boda boda operator George Simiyu before shooting him four times, twice on the chest, once in the armpit, and once on the neck.
Simiyu was accompanied by a friend who was also shot twice but miraculously survived and is undergoing treatment at Tongaren Health Centre.
The shooting sparked widespread outrage, and the residents, fueled by anger, lynched Kerich, who was reportedly wearing civilian clothes at the time.
The incident occurred while the boda boda riders were protesting the deplorable state of the Ndula-Hambichi Road, which they had barricaded.
It is alleged that Kerich had been assessing the damage before he lost his cool and went on a shooting spree.
