On July 15, 2019, Kenya Airways received an air service licence from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), allowing it to commence new domestic flight routes in the near future.

The licence, which is valid for three years, starting from March 22, 2019, enables the airline to operate flights to Wajir, Homabay, Lokichoggio, Isiolo, and Maasai Mara using various aircraft types, including Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Boeing 737, and Boeing 8170.

Kenya Airways will also be able to operate flights using Embraer 190, Embraer 145, and DHCS aircraft based at Jomo Kenyatta, Moi, Kisumu, and Eldoret airports.

The airline's expansion plan comes at a time when it is looking to shore up revenues and cut costs to improve its financial position.

With the new licence, Kenya Airways is likely to increase competition for smaller airlines such as Silverstone Air, which already operates flights to Wajir and Maasai Mara.
