West Pokot County Officials Embroiled in Ksh.90 Million Maize Scandal

On July 15, 2019, five West Pokot County Government officials accused of involvement in a Ksh.90 million maize scam appeared before Eldoret Senior Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa.

The officials, who were released on a Ksh.200,000 cash bail or bond of Ksh.2 million with surety of the same amount, are accused of alleged irregular purchase of 20,000 bags of maize in 2018.

They include Mike Kiptoo Perkilea (County Secretary), Titus Toroitich Mayech (Finance officer), Elvis Mwanga (ICT), Alice Chepkosgei (Procurement Officer), and Joseph Lolemtum (Evaluation Committee member).

The suspects are charged with 18 counts for allegedly failing to comply with tendering laws, delivery of dry maize in absence of a list of pre-qualified suppliers, and other malpractices.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges and the case will be mentioned on July 30, 2019.
