Nairobi County Speaker Faces Theft Charges

On April 22, 2022, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura Kangara was arraigned before a Milimani court in Nairobi, Kenya, facing charges of stealing Sh 5,348,984 from the County Government of Nairobi.

According to court documents, Mutura allegedly committed the offence between February 1, 2021, and February 28, 2022.

His lawyers, led by Duncan Okatch, requested the court to release their client on bail pending the hearing and determination of an application filed at the High Court to stop his prosecution.

Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu released Mutura on a cash bail of Sh 500,000, pending his plea on May 16, 2022.
