On July 15, 2019, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) team faced criticism over claims it was backing a review of the constitution through a referendum.

However, BBI chairperson Senator Yusuf Haji denied these allegations, stating that the team was still collecting views from the public as per their mandate.

The team had been touring various counties to gather public opinion on the proposed constitutional changes.

According to Haji, the team was in the process of collecting views from Kenyans and was expected to complete its work early next month.

At the time, the BBI team had covered 39 counties, with 8 remaining on their itinerary.

Elsewhere, recruitment of national census officials in Kisii county was on standstill following allegations of unfairness during the exercise.
