Kenya's volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, has been making waves in the African volleyball scene, while the national football team, Harambee Stars, continues to struggle.

On Sunday, July 14, 2019, Malkia Strikers defeated Senegal 3-0 in the semi-finals of the 2019 Women African Volleyball Nations Championship, held at the 6 October Hall in Giza, Cairo.

"Revenge is what fans were talking about, not us," said Kenya captain Mercy Moim. "This is volleyball, not football. For us, it was about winning the game."

Moim attributed their success to their tactical serving and shutting down Senegal's main players.

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Senegal at the 30 June Stadium in New Cairo on June 30, 2019.

Despite receiving Sh250 million in public funding for the 2019 Afcon, Harambee Stars have never beaten Senegal in a competitive football match.

On the other hand, Malkia Strikers, who received no government funding for their campaign in Egypt, have never lost a volleyball set to Senegal at this level.

Moim lamented the lack of government support for the achieving Malkia Strikers, saying they had to rely on the volleyball federation for maintenance and that they did not even have adequate kit.
