On July 15, 2019, the European Union extended congratulations to England on their maiden 50-over cricket World Cup triumph.
European Commission chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas expressed his enthusiasm for the English team's nail-biting Super Over win against New Zealand, saying, "Congratulations to the England cricket team on winning the men's cricket World Cup in a nail-biting final against New Zealand. Cricket is coming home!"
England's captain, Irishman Eoin Morgan, led the team to victory, giving the side a European gloss. The European Union also congratulated the Portuguese roller hockey team, who won their own world cup final against Argentina on the same day.
