On June 1, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the new generation bank notes during the 56th Madaraka Day celebrations in Narok. However, the US Embassy in Kenya has rejected the use of these new notes, citing the need for further procedures to accept them.
According to a statement issued by the US Embassy on Thursday, visa applicants will only be able to pay for services using the previous Kenyan shillings until the new procedures are in place.
"The Embassy of the United States is currently developing procedures to accept the new Kenyan shillings," the statement read. "Until these procedures are in place, consular applicants will only be able to pay for services using the previous Kenyan shillings."
As a result, hundreds of Kenyans applying for US visas have been left stranded, with no clear indication of when the new procedures will be implemented.
It's worth noting that the US Embassy has advised visa applicants that they are allowed to continue paying with a credit card.
