On April 19, 2022, Jubilee Party made a surprise move by selecting Polycarp Igathe, the Chief Commercial Officer of Equity Bank, as its candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
According to NTV journalists Kennedy Muriithi and James Smart, Igathe's nomination means that Kenya National Commerce of Chambers and Industry (KNCCI) Richard Ngatia and businesswoman Agnes Kagure have been rejected.
It is unclear whether Ngatia and Kagure were consulted before the decision was made.
Ngatia, who has been aggressively campaigning for the seat, has been adversely mentioned in the multi-billion shillings Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) scandal.
His company won a huge tender to supply medical equipment following the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020.
Meanwhile, Igathe, who resigned as Nairobi deputy governor in 2018, is expected to run on a joint ticket with ODM's Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi.
Wanyonyi had been fronted by ODM for the Nairobi top seat, but it is likely that he has shelved his ambition in favour of Igathe.
