Which Way Kenya? ¶
On January 30th, thousands of Kenyans gathered at Uhuru Park to swear in the People's President, H.E. Raila Odinga, in a peaceful and dignified display of determination for electoral justice.
The event was a response to electoral fraud, with the IEBC defying the Supreme Court and failing to conduct a free, fair, and credible election on August 8th. The IEBC remains in contempt of court by refusing to open the servers, despite the release of results extracted from the servers showing that Raila Odinga won the election.
The People's Assembly has outlined a roadmap to electoral justice and just government, with a focus on securing electoral justice, restructuring the Kenyan state, and strengthening and defending devolution. The roadmap includes:
- Electoral Justice: Ending the culture of impunity, abuse of power, and electoral fraud, guaranteeing the right to vote, and ensuring that every vote counts.
- Restructuring the Kenyan State: Considering a parliamentary system, rotating executive authority between regions, making parliament inclusive and responsive to the people, and transforming the security services.
- Strengthening and Defending Devolution: Proposing strong political and economically viable units, controlling land and natural resources, devolving taxation, and equitable sharing of the national debt.
The People's Assembly plans to convene the inaugural National Convention at the end of February, with the resolutions validated by the people through a referendum. The goal is to see the People's Assembly process culminate in a presidential election under a new electoral regime no later than August 2018.
Thank you.
