Published on July 15, 2019, a Kenyan court ruled in favor of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) in a case against the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The ruling ordered TSC to implement promotions for teachers based on merit, seniority, vacancies, academic, and professional qualifications.
KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has called for a meeting with TSC to discuss the implementation of the court's orders. Sossion warned that if TSC moves to challenge the ruling in the Appellate Court, KNUT will withdraw teachers from classrooms.
KNUT is also pushing for the redeployment of union officials who were transferred to schools outside their branches. The union wants TSC to immediately engage Parliament to appropriate funds for the promotion of 50,000 teachers who are overdue for promotion.
KNUT has been advocating for promotions on merit, seniority, vacancies, academic, and professional qualifications. Many teachers have been stuck in one job for the last five years despite acquiring higher qualifications.
