On April 2, 2019, Supreme Court Judge Jackton Ojwang' was suspended by President Uhuru Kenyatta following a recommendation from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to form a tribunal to investigate his conduct.
The tribunal, which began its sittings on an unspecified date, is chaired by Court of Appeal Judge Alnashir Vishram and consists of six other members, including Justice (Rtd.) Festus Azangalala and Ambrose Weda.
The investigation is centered around allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and corruption against Judge Ojwang', who is accused of manipulating judgments to favor Sony Sugar company in exchange for favors from Migori Governor Okoth Obado.
According to the tribunal's lead assisting counsel, Paul Nyamodi, the trial will rely on 22 witness statements, although the hearings are being held behind closed doors after the court granted the judge's request for a private hearing.
Chief Justice Maraga stated that the JSC reached the decision after receiving strong evidence implicating the judge in gross misconduct, abuse of office, and corruption in a case involving Migori Governor Okoth Obado.
