On July 14, 2019, Algeria secured a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations final after a thrilling match against Nigeria.
With the match heading for extra time, Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez delivered a fierce set-piece in the 97th minute, scoring a stunning free-kick that sealed the win for Algeria.
The match had seen an own goal by Nigeria's William Troost-Ekong give Algeria the lead, but Odion Ighalo's penalty levelled the scores.
Algeria will face Senegal in the final on July 19, 2019.
Algeria started the match brightly, with striker Baghdad Bounedjah creating several scoring opportunities, including a shot straight at Nigeria's goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
However, it was Troost-Ekong's own goal that gave Algeria the lead, and despite Nigeria's efforts to equalise, it was not until a VAR review that Aissa Mandi was penalised for handling Peter Etebo's shot, allowing Ighalo to score the equalising penalty.
Despite having one fewer day of rest than their opponents, Algeria looked well in control in the first half, but Nigeria's pacey forwards Ahmed Musa and Samuel Chukwueze threatened Algeria's goal until the late Mahrez strike.
