On July 11, 2019, the Nairobi County government announced that the Sh400 million bursary fund was ready for disbursement, following the approval of the Controller of Budget.
The fund was delayed due to the county's failure to account for Sh90 million bursaries in the 2017/2018 financial year.
County Finance Executive Charles Kerich stated that the county had prepared a comprehensive report on the previous year's Sh357 million bursary fund, which was submitted to the Controller of Budget last week.
As a result, the county was given the green light to withdraw and disburse the Sh397.7 million bursary fund.
However, ward representatives have been given a week to verify the details of the beneficiaries they presented in December, and to ensure that the correct names and schools are presented.
MCAs had raised concerns that the list of beneficiaries might need some changes, citing instances where beneficiaries might have changed schools or no longer needed the money.
County Education Executive Lucia Mulwa presented the list for verification last week, advising MCAs to sensitise beneficiaries and recommend that they remain in one school unless there are genuine reasons to change.
Meanwhile, the Controller of Budget has recommended that payments be made directly to schools through electronic funds transfer instead of cheques.
