On July 15, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at the Kaloleni Police Station in Kilifi, where a police officer took his own life in a temporary structure used by night shift officers.
Constable Kelvin Kipkemoi, who had completed his shift at around 5:30 am, shot himself dead in the temporary structure located about 70 meters away from the police report office.
Kilifi County Police Commander Patrick Okeri confirmed the incident, stating that the officer had no issues during his shift and that the shot was heard by his colleague, who found him dead after checking on the situation.
A colleague of the deceased, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that Kipkemoi's wife had visited him at the house the previous night, and that they had an argument.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear, Commander Okeri urged officers in the county to open up to their friends and relatives about any problems they may be facing, stating, "There are issues that one cannot handle and they need to be addressed by friends and relatives. I urge my officers to open up on their problems so that we can tackle them together."
