On July 15, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) dealt a blow to Amani National Congress (ANC) by rejecting its attempt to expel MP Geodfrey Osotsi from parliament.
According to a letter from IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati, the commission was not convinced that ANC had sufficient grounds to effect changes to its nominations list submitted to the IEBC in 2017.
ANC had sought to eject Osotsi from parliament due to his ardent support of Raila Odinga and publicly disagreeing with his party leader Musalia Mudavadi on several issues of national prominence.
However, IEBC Chair Chebukati argued that the list of 98 people nominated by the party in 2017 would be valid until 2022 unless for reasons provided by the law.
He also stated that any issues about the nominees on the present lists must be supported by relevant proof and evidence before the commission can accept a new party list.
Osotsi has been at the center of controversy within his party due to his vocal support for Raila Odinga.
MP Osotsi's love for Raila Odinga has been a point of contention within ANC, but the IEBC's decision has given him a temporary reprieve.
