Victor Wanyama Set to Acquire UK Passport Amid Tottenham Exit Rumors ¶
Kenyan international Victor Wanyama is set to acquire a British passport after residing in the United Kingdom for more than six years, a move that could impact his future at Tottenham Hotspur.
According to UK immigration laws, one can apply for citizenship by naturalisation after five years of residence. Wanyama first landed in the UK in 2011 after signing for Scottish giants Celtic from Belgian club Beerschot.
He later moved to England with Southampton in 2013 and then to Tottenham in 2016. Reports in the UK indicate that Wanyama was keen to quit Spurs last summer for a move abroad but had to wait to acquire his British passport first.
Wanyama's acquisition of a British passport will see him recognised as a citizen and will enable him to travel and move to other leagues across the world with ease.
He would not be the first Kenyan footballer to acquire a foreign passport, as goalkeeper Arnold Origi switched his allegiance to Norway in 2016.
Meanwhile, this latest development comes at a time when Wanyama's future at Tottenham is uncertain, with the club recently signing French midfielder Tanguay Ndombele.
Newly-promoted side Aston Villa are understood to be interested in the player, which could further complicate Wanyama's situation at Tottenham.
