On July 13, 2019, police in Nairobi West arrested businesswoman Joyce Akinyi, who was found in possession of narcotics, alongside a Congolese national. The arrest came after officers recovered two kilograms of heroin from her room.

According to reports, police also found several passports bearing photos of Akinyi with different names and nationalities.

This is not the first time Akinyi has found herself on the wrong side of the law. In 2018, she was arrested in India, along with Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala, in connection with a money laundering racket. They were later released after government intervention.

Akinyi's past is also marred by controversy, including a previous marriage to businessman Antony Chinedu, who was deported from Kenya in 2013.
