Torrential monsoon rains have caused widespread destruction in Nepal and northeast India, claiming at least 50 lives in Nepal and 11 in India.

In Nepal, the heavy rains since Thursday have affected thousands of people in several districts, especially in the eastern region and southern plains.

Nepal police spokesman Bishwaraj Pokharel said that 33 people are missing while over 1,100 have been rescued.

"We have mobilised all resources in the country for search, rescue and relief and have been able to reach all affected areas," Pokharel told AFP.

The situation is expected to improve from Monday as river levels are expected to return to normal.

Monsoon rains from June to September cause widespread death and destruction across South Asia each year.
