On July 13, 2019, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru married Nairobi-based lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo in a colourful traditional wedding ceremony at Kiamugumo Primary School in Gichugu Constituency.
The event, which was attended by over 2000 people, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nasa principals Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, and several Cabinet secretaries, brought to an end speculation about the governor's relationship with Waiganjo.
The traditional wedding, known as ngurario in the Agikuyu community, was solemnised under customary law by a Kikuyu tradition counsellor, Mr Kimani Murugami.
During the ceremony, the couple was forced to vow that they would never divorce or separate, and later blessed by their parents using Agikuyu traditional brew muratina.
After the ceremony, the governor served Waiganjo with a traditionally-prepared sour porridge using a calabash, but he declined to take it initially, citing that his hands had not been washed and the porridge was sugarless.
