On Saturday morning, police officers raided the Nairobi West residence of Joyce Akinyi, a Kenyan businesswoman, and apprehended her alongside a Congolese man.

According to police, the two were found in possession of two kilograms of heroin, valued at approximately Sh3 million.

The suspects are being detained at Muthaiga Police Station pending their arraignment in court on Monday.

This is not Ms. Akinyi's first run-in with the law. In 2015, she was arrested with a suspicious powder, along with three other suspects, but was later released.

Her history of alleged drug trafficking dates back to 2013, when she was apprehended alongside Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala at Isinya along the Nairobi-Namanga highway.

Ms. Akinyi's troubles with the law also extend to 2008, when she and Wanjala were detained in India after authorities found them with undeclared Sh7.59 million.

Her high-profile personal life has also made headlines, including a 2009 fight with her then-husband, Nigerian businessman Anthony Chinedu.

Mr. Chinedu was later deported in June 2013, following a directive from the President, due to allegations of drug trafficking.
