On March 28, 2022, the National Assembly approved a Supplementary Budget that includes a KSh1.4 billion allocation to the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) from the Kenya Defence Forces.
The Treasury has increased the budget for the military-run KMC by KSh1.4 billion (297.87%) from KSh470 million to KSh1.87 billion in the current financial year.
The Defence ministry attributed the increase to enhanced security operations, the revitalisation of the Kenya Meat Commission, and personnel emoluments.
The Kenya Defence Forces took control of the cash-strapped meat firm in 2020 following an order from President Uhuru Kenyatta, with the aim of boosting operations and ensuring its survival.
The Kenya Meat Commission has an installed daily slaughter capacity of 1,250 large animals and 2,000 small stock.
