On March 28, 2022, a key challenger in the Homa Bay gubernatorial race dropped out and endorsed the incumbent Governor Cyprian Awiti.
Businessman Jared Kiasa, who had been vying for the ODM ticket, announced his decision to withdraw from the race and throw his support behind Mbadi, citing his desire to see Mbadi lead the county as governor.
Speaking at a rally in Homa Bay attended by Mbadi and other supporters, Kiasa stated that he had decided to back Mbadi due to his confidence in the latter's leadership abilities.
Other notable candidates in the ODM ticket race include former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga, Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, former Nairobi Governor Evan Kidero, KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori, and former Homa Bay County Secretary Isaiah Ogwe.
