On Friday, July 12, 2019, Timothy Cheruiyot, a world silver medalist, dominated the men's 1500m at the Herculis EBS Diamond League in Monaco, a non-scoring race in the round.
Cheruiyot's Kenyan compatriot, George Manangoi, finished sixth but set a personal best of 3:31.49, earning a hug from Cheruiyot, with whom he and his brother train.
Nijel Amos produced the fastest 800m since the London 2012 Olympic final, where David Rudisha set the current world record of 1:40.91, and Ferguson Rotich of Kenya finished second.
Sifan Hassan, the European 5000m champion, broke the 23-year-old 1500m world record with a time of 4:12.33, surpassing Russia's Svetlana Masterkova's mark of 4:12.56 set in 1996.
After the field had been paced through 800m in 2:08.20, Hassan moved into the lead with 600 meters remaining, with Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay the only runner in touch at that stage.
As things turned out, Hassan failed to meet her ambition of running three or four seconds faster than her best of 4:14.71, set in London in 2017, but she looked radiant after the race.
