On Friday night, a 25-year-old man went on a rampage in Menet village, Soin/Sigowet constituency, Kericho, beheading his neighbour and injuring two others. The suspect, Dennis Korir, was arrested at Sosiot trading centre early on Saturday morning.
According to Belgut police boss Phillip Okello, Korir had fled to the trading centre after committing the offence. "The suspect who went into hiding in a nearby maize plantation was arrested around 4am," Okello said.
Korir claimed during interrogation that he had dumped the machete used in the attack in a pit latrine. However, Okello stated that the police believe there was an underlying issue that led to the attack.
The incident occurred when Korir arrived at Samuel Ngetich's compound armed with a panga and picked a quarrel with him. Korir attacked Ngetich, killing him on the spot, and then attacked other neighbours, cutting them with the machete.
Two of the injured victims, Nehemiah Kaptich and Josephine Langat, were taken to Sigowet Sub-County Hospital for treatment before being referred to Kericho County Hospital. The body of the deceased was moved to Sigowet Sub County Hospital mortuary.
This incident comes barely a day after a tea picker at Cheborgei village in Bureti killed her employer over a Sh150 debt.
